An Kindness of People We Don't Know: The Way a Gentleman I Had Just Met Supported Me Secure the Position That Transformed My Existence

During the closing decade of the 80s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a companion. Since my friend was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the graduate housing, a sizeable multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, sat down, and began chatting with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I my profession was, and I told him that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been conducting research involving microscopic analysis.

He mentioned that there was an electron microscope unit at the university – adjacent to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a role with them. I laughed it off, telling him that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The next day I ventured out, coming back to the dining hall that night. The engineering student walked over to me and informed me that he had set up a meeting for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Given that he had taken the effort, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where everything seems achievable – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for three years. An advantage of the role was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to complete a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his name, but his remarkable generosity changed my life in numerous aspects. I didn't possess the courage or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and ask for a job. Moreover, I had always wanted to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

Perhaps most importantly, that job in New York paved the way for a job in Zurich where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I currently share four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That helpful person changed my trajectory in life, and I’m forever grateful.
