Defense Department Investigation Finds Hegseth Put Troops in Jeopardy with Messaging App Conversation.

A long-awaited Department of Defense report has concluded that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth breached official protocols by disclosing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a person briefed on the findings.

Particulars of the Incident

The chat group in dispute contained details about a planned air attack in Yemen against Houthi fighters. This chat came to light after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other officials in the group allegedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other participants are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for handling classified information.

Serious Threat to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

However, the report acknowledged that Hegseth had the ability to declassify the material he distributed, though it was not specified whether he formally did so.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the mission. He added that he possessed the authority to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is expected to be made public later this week.
