Patients Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users purchasing such treatments must be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts believe the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals contend that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the persistent character of obesity," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.

Patient Experiences

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden return of cravings.

"It was like something flipping and you become extremely hungry," recalled a patient.

This challenge is compounded if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, clinicians emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing behavioural changes.
